The Texas Rangers have formally identified 25-year-old Richard Sanders as a suspect in the unsolved disappearance and presumed murder of Tara Lea Blue, an East Texas mother who vanished twenty-five years ago. The case centers on events that occurred on November 2, 2001, in Shelby County, Texas. On that date, which marked the opening morning of deer season, a hunter reported a suspicious scene in a wooded area near Flat Fork Creek, located just blocks from where Blue was last seen. Mike Hanson, who was a Texas Game Warden at the time and is now the chief deputy of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene and noted that evidence recovered indicated a violent crime had taken place. Although investigators concluded that Blue had been murdered, her body has never been found. Tara Blue was last seen in the company of Richard Sanders, who also disappeared and has not been seen or heard from since. Sanders is described as having brown hair, blue eyes, and standing approximately 6-foot-5. Authorities note he has distinctive tattoos, including a Grim Reaper and a teardrop near his eye. Blue is described as having blonde hair, brown eyes, and standing between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-8, with tattoos and several scars. She may have used the last name Windham and left behind a daughter. A quarter-century after the incident, the Texas Rangers have reactivated the investigation, with former investigators collaborating to reexamine evidence and connect previously unlinked dots. The Texas Crime Stoppers program is offering a cash reward of up to $3,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Authorities have not specified whether Sanders fled East Texas or the circumstances surrounding the two individuals being together prior to the incident. The family of Tara Blue held a memorial service for her in 2010, despite the continued absence of her remains.
