The New Castle Crime Unit of the Pennsylvania State Police is actively seeking public assistance in solving a homicide that occurred 53 years ago in Lawrence County. The victim, identified as Frank Dewayne Iwanejko, was 22 years old at the time of his death. The incident took place on the early morning of June 9, 1973, near a quarry off Covert Road in Union Township. According to police reports, Iwanejko and a 22-year-old female acquaintance were seated in a vehicle after a date when two male suspects approached and attempted to rob them. When Iwanejko refused to hand over money, a struggle ensued, resulting in his death at the hands of the first suspect. The female witness fled into a nearby wooded area and remained there until dawn, when she contacted law enforcement. The Pennsylvania State Police, New Castle station, has announced that new leads have been developed in the case and are marking the anniversary of the crime by appealing for information. Two suspects are currently at large. The first suspect is described as a white male who was approximately 22 years old at the time of the incident, standing about 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 135 pounds, with a thin build and long, dark curly hair. The second suspect is described as a white male who was approximately 24 years old at the time, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing around 190 pounds, with a heavy build and medium-length brown hair. Investigators are urging anyone with information regarding these individuals or the events of that night to come forward. All tips will be kept confidential.
