Tydrick Davis, a 21-year-old suspect charged with capital murder, remains at large after being mistakenly released by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Davis is accused of shooting and killing 39-year-old Ebonie Gilbert on September 26, 2024, outside her home on Bennett Street in North Beaumont. According to reports, Davis was transferred to the Larry Gist State Jail in November 2024 to serve a separate one-year and nine-month sentence for theft. Although he was scheduled to be returned to Jefferson County custody upon completion of that sentence, he was released early on March 30, 2026. Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens confirmed that a detainer was prepared to ensure Davis's return but was not properly processed by TDCJ, which stated the document was undated and not included in the submitted pen packet. Assistant District Attorney Brit Featherston confirmed that law enforcement, including the U.S. Marshals, is actively searching for Davis, who now faces warrants for capital murder and escape. The victim's family has expressed deep concern over the error and is calling for a comprehensive root cause analysis, full accountability, and an expedited trial.
